Interesting stuff - thanks for posting this, Paula. Clearly we would all be refreshed by taking Sabbath - but the question of making it a social contract is tricky, isn't it? Taking Sabbath is so much easier when it's a community decision. I've been coming to appreciate that more in other areas too. Liturgy: Something you join, not something you have to invent and protect. But getting everyone rolling on the same schedule seems almost impossible.

Marti - good insights! I'm intrigued by your liturgy comments - in what ways do you see it being "protected"?
The legalism of Sabbath (it seems including the actual day it was supposed to be celebrated on) was challenged by Jesus.
It'd be great to find a community with whom to share reFreshment of Sabbath spirit!

I was just thinking that when you are the only one doing something other people don't realize it, may not understand what you are doing - so sometimes you have to protect it in some sense. When you are part of a community that has agreed to do or not do something, the group protects it: you can relax knowing that everybody's decided we're not going to schedule meetings or leave each other messages on our day of prayer. Or we're all going to be quiet as we leave the service of darkness. Or we're going to come to the Bible study with prayer requests to share. Social contract. These days we don't often have a social contract on keeping a Sabbath or an agreement on what it might look like if we did. That's freeing, but also leaves us vulnerable and in some sense "unsupported." Everyone's on their own. I can say I'm not going to go shopping, but the stores are open; I can say I'm not going to read email, but that doesn't keep people from sending it. Or I can say Saturday would be a great day to sleep in by the little girls next store don't stay quiet.

BTW, I posted a few helpful comments on Sabbath from Mark Buchanan on my blog. Click through if you are interested.
